Startup Profile:

Steve Silverstein, Not Your Average Joe's

But even with this success, Silverstein is still a startup restaurateur. That's because he is actively opening new restaurants.Four new locations (two of them already opened by mid-year) are planned for 2005 and six more are planned for 2006. "The new sites are set in New England, but by 2007 we'll find an entirely different geographic area," says Silverstein. He'll be a startup restaurateur for the foreseeable future, too. In fact, long-range plans call for 52 stores within the next five years. Silverstein is proud that Not Your Average Joe's was named Nation's Restaurant News' Hot Concept of The Year. "That's the Academy Award of the restaurant business," says Silverstein.

Having raised more than $14 million in equity over the years and working with what he calls "a business model that puts us on top," Silverstein sees his strength in the financial side of the business. However that's just one part of success, and so, he says, "I read everything I can get my hands on." That's where Restaurant Startup & Growth comes in. He says, "I'm not your average startup, but I find myself being totally educated by the magazine." He says the magazine has fundamental information that every restaurant operator needs and sums it up this way: "Restaurant Startup & Growth is the most practical and may be the most valuable magazine I read."
